Plastic Frame
For comfort, lightweight and flexibility,
plastic framed sunglasses are a classic
solution. There are several types of
plastics used to make sunglass frames. The
cheaper styles and brands will use CR-39
grade plastic. This type of plastic is cheap
and is used in most of your dollar store
type sunglass frames. It will get the job
done but is not very flexible and is prone
to breakage and has little impact
resistance.
Polycarbonate plastics are a much higher
grade of substance and have the added
advantage of being somewhat flexible.
Polycarbonate plastics will "give" a bit
before hitting the breaking point and are
much more scratch resistant. This is the
same type of plastics that make up the base
of the plastic lenses as well. There are
special processes though, that lens material
goes through to make it polarized that the
frames don't need to be subjected to.
Plastic can be molded into any shape for
replicating whatever style of sunglass you
want. Big Elvis glasses can be produced with
plastic frames that are still as lightweight
despite the size. If it were not for plastic
sunglass frames, no one would be able to
wear the "Jackie O." style of oversized
sunglasses. Plastic mini frame sunglasses
provide variety for the young ones.
Children's first sunglass frames are usually
the plastic variety. They are rugged enough
to take playtime battering and are light
enough that young people can still wear them
in comfort.
Ralph Lauren sunglasses utilize plastic in
most of the ladies sunglass models that
carry the brand. They are obtainable in a
wide variety of colors and can easily have
crystals embedded in them for extra flash.
Renegade makes a number of their sunglass
series with polycarbonate plastic frames. It
keeps down the weight for the various large
styles and still provides plenty of strength
for durability. Gucci developed a special
beveled lens made from the same plastics as
the sunglasses frames. These stylish
additions to your fashion collection wear
well and have the distinction of carrying
their famous brand.
While many extreme sports competitors prefer
nylon for their game play, plastic wrap
around sunglass frames will still stand up
to most rugged play while providing a light
weight for comfort and visibility that is
needed to compete. Plastic frames work very
well with the rimless style of sunglasses.
Whether they are injection molded wrap
around rimless or have the temple pieces
fused to the lenses, polycarbonate plastic
is rugged enough hold its shape and lend
support to the lenses.
