Oversized Sunglasses
The fashion popularity for oversized
sunglasses started in the 1960's when
everyone seemed to want to emulate the First
Lady, Jackie Kennedy. She seemed to always
be sporting a pair of giant sized sunshades
and, with the celebrity status she and her
husband President John F. Kennedy portrayed,
a fashion trend was born. While the fashion
for the oversized sunglasses waned in the
1970's and 80's, by the turn of the new
century, young girls were again fascinated
with the concept of the oversized designer
look sunglasses and they have become more
popular than ever. With her much publicized
marriage to Greek shipping giant Aristotle
Onassis, her oversized sunglasses became
known as the "Jackie O" style.
Such designers as D&G and Gucci made sure to
fuel this new desire for celebrity incognito
with expanding lines of oversized sunglass
styles. From heavy metal frames to
lightweight plastic the designer houses
began producing oversized sunglasses in
every conceivable color and shade. Since the
fad was being developed more with the
younger girls, Candie's became the number
one fashion provider for the pre adult set
with many oversized glam sunglasses styles.
With a playful attitude they began to modify
existing sunglass styles and soon were
presenting oversized aviator sunglasses and
oversized oval wrap sunglasses.
Of course, with the advent of the oversized
sunglasses, designers were quick to
accessorize the new style with oversized
sunglass cases to hold their product when
not in use. The materials, colors and
designs of these oversized sunglasses cases
were a fashion statement unto them selves
and were made with coordination of outfit in
mind.
One of the drawbacks to oversized sunglasses
is that with the huge lenses, they do not
always translate out well into prescription
sunglasses. If you need corrective lenses
you might want to wear contacts under your
designer oversized sunglasses. But to their
advantage, a self-adjusting transitional
lens oversized pair of sunglasses will fit
into almost any environment.
Jackie O. might have started the trend, but
many of today's hottest celebrities are
making sure it is here to stay. Popular with
many new stars as a way to avoid recognition
by overzealous paparazzi the oversized
sunglasses continue to have movie star
appeal. With the likes of Jessica Simpson,
Nicole Richie and Mary-Kate Olsen sporting
these big fashion designed oversized
sunglasses, there is going to be an
increasing effort by the designer houses to
keep coming up with new ways to enlarge your
sunglasses options.
